About Lafayette, Louisiana

Founded in 1821 as Vermillionville for its location on the Vermillion River and renamed in 1884 as Lafayette for General Lafayette, the county seat of the Lafayette Parish in Louisiana is located in the southwestern area of the state. As the fourth largest city in the state, Lafayette is known as The Hub City and its motto is The Heart of Cajun Country.

While being The Heart of Cajun Country, Lafayette is also a center of Louisiana Creole culture. There are several festivals that take place annually celebrating Cajun and Creole culture, as well as the second largest Mardi Gras celebration in Louisiana.
